History of the Institute
In June 1993, ASJA held its first summer Campus Judicial Affairs Training Institute at Bowling Green State University. Don Gehring chaired the institute which was attended by 130 people. After holding a highly successful second annual training institute at Bowling Green State University in July 1994, the ASJA Board of Directors approved a resolution formally naming the institute the Donald D. Gehring Campus Judicial Affairs Training Institute.
In 1995 Institute began moving around the country to better serve members throughout the country. The 1995 & 1996 Institutes were held at Western Washington University in Bellingham. In 1997 Institute participants were introduced to the competency-based model that was held that year and in 1998 at St. Mary’s College in Indiana. The end of the decade saw Roger Williams University in Bristol, Rhode Island hosting the 1999 & 2000 Institutes.
In 2000, after crossing the northern half of these United States, the Institute moved down south to College Station where Texas A&M University exposed participants to both the ASJA Central Office and an expanded version of the curriculum adding an "advanced judicial track" to the mix. In 2002, the Institute ventured west into the Wasatch Mountain range and offered yet more opportunities to a record number (179) of participants at the University of Utah.
As of this date, the Donald D. Gehring Campus Judicial Affairs Training Institute has expanded to include both the basic judicial and mediation curriculum and an advanced track for those professionals interested in a significant refresher experience into the fields of conflict resolution and higher education legal issues.
