Senior Student Affairs Officers (SSAO) Seminar
Senior Student Affairs Officer Seminar
Wednesday, February 3, 2010
1-5:30 pm
Cost: $75.00
For the purposes of this program, Senior Student Affairs Officers (SSAO) are individuals with ultimate or substantial responsibility for policy development. They are responsible for more than just the implementation of the student judicial process; they create and revise policies and processes, supervise additional student affairs functions, have increased levels of professional responsibility, etc.
This year the SSAO Seminar will be an afternoon half-day program.
The SSAO program is designed to provide an interactive and engaging format that explores one or more current major topics that have policy implications for higher education. We may also welcome tenure track or teaching faculty involved in the preparation of future student affairs administrators. Members who are not the chief student affairs officer by title may be reviewed by the program committee for participation in the SSAO track.
If you have any questions regarding the SSAO Seminar contact Brent Ericson, brent.ericson.1@bc.edu.

Learning Assessment in Student Conduct Administration
The purpose of this session is to share the results of a mixed methods study on current assessment practices in student conduct administration. Risk Management Issues for Student Affairs Administrators
Modern college campuses and campus staff are facing a myriad of new issues brought about in the past decade – increased numbers of students with mental health issues, skyrocketing prescription drug use/abuse, budget cuts, greater threat of litigation, increasing/steady alcohol consumption rates, etc. In addition, some student affairs staff are being asked to play significant roles on threat assessment/CARE teams. How can those working in student affairs manage “risky” or “potentially dangerous” students, work with medical/mental health professionals on the team, and protect themselves and their institutions from liability? How can we best balance the needs of ‘at risk’ students and campus safety? How do FERPA and the medical privacy laws inform this discussion? In this highly interactive session, Professor Peter Lake will discuss emerging trends in risk management and student affairs, and spend a significant amount of time answering audience questions.
