Date(s): August 28, 2019

Time: 2:30 PM  EST - 3:30 PM  EST

Partnerships with Purpose: Policy & State Laws

Hazing is a complex form of social ritual and - as ritual - it is not often identified even by those who are hazing victims as something that is wrong. Addressing cultures of hazing on college campuses requires careful thought, consideration, and planning. Though campus leaders, including student conduct and fraternity and sorority professionals, who know their campuses and student cultures well, are in the best position to take steps to educate and change hazing cultures on campus many state lawmakers are introducing legislation designed to limit hazing, usually following a specific tragedy or death of a student. Our presenters will cover the topic of state and federal hazing legislation from campus to Capitol Hill, reviewing recently introduced legislation across the states, taking a closer look at the implementation of the Piazza legislation in Pennsylvania, and exploring conversation around hazing awareness and hazing incidents from within fraternity and sorority organizations.

Presenters:
Sandy Bilus, Saul Ewing Arnstein & Lehr LLP
Teri Lyn Hinds, NASPA
Chris Jefferson, Pennsylvania State University
