Our professional and personal lives often intersect, and especially when current events weigh so heavily on so many of us and our colleagues. This webinar will focus on how to balance representing your authentic self with the professional expectations of your employer. In other words: how do you maintain your integrity without sacrificing a (needed) paycheck? How can you support students in a neutral professional way, when you are not neutral personally? Strategies for action and engagement will be shared, as well as how to set and maintain boundaries that ultimately serve to keep you safe as you engage in social action. We will also discuss ways to immerse yourself in learning about current issues, uplifting the action of minoritized groups, and supporting professional colleagues who have a personal connection to ongoing crises.
Presenters and Bios:
Dr. Amanda Mesirow
Assistant Executive Director

Dr. Amanda J. Mesirow (she/hers) currently serves as the Assistant Executive Director for ASCA. She earned her PhD in Educational Administration and Foundations from Illinois State University, with a research focus on whiteness in community college conduct systems. Mesirow earned her MS in Counseling and Educational Psychology from Kansas State University, has nearly 20 years of student affairs experience in residence life, student life, and conduct, and has worked on large public, small private, and religiously affiliated campuses. Mesirow has presented and published numerous times, most often on topics of social justice and conduct practices, and presents professionally through AJM Keynotes and Workshops. She also co-authored a chapter and wrote a case study for the book "Conduct and Community: A Residence Life Practitioner's Guide" (2018), co-published by ASCA and ACUHO-I. As a conduct practitioner, Mesirow championed multiple equity initiatives to create a conduct system that is just and inclusive. Additionally, Mesirow is involved in the community through the Prison Solidarity Project and the Point Foundation. She is proudly queer, disabled, and Jewish, and uses both her privileged and oppressed identities to fight for justice.
Dr. Shay Gresham Howard

Dr. Shay Gresham Howard is Assistant Dean of Student Conduct in the Office of Student Conduct and Judicial Affairs at Tennessee State University in Nashville, TN, where she serves as a Director and member of the Division of Student Affairs leadership team. Dr. Gresham Howard was an Assistant Prosecuting Attorney in the juvenile and general sessions court. Her professional career has also included founding and running a real estate investment business for over 16 years before entering higher education – which is her dream job.
André Clanton
Director of Conflict Resolution and Accountability
Life University
André L. Clanton has served in the field of student affairs for over 20 years. He has worked at Life University since 2015. He has overseen student conduct, Title IX, and Housing and Residence Life. He currently serves as the Director of Conflict Resolution and Accountability; Chair of the Student Behavioral Assessment Team; President of the Black Faculty and Staff Association; and advises the Student American Black Chiropractic Association and the Voices of Life Gospel Choir. Clanton is also a member of the Association of Title IX Administrators, the Association of Christians in Student Development, and the Association of Student Conduct Administration where he serves as a Director-at-Large for Small Institutions and the Board Liaison to the Sexual Misconduct and Title IX, Academic Integrity, and Religiously-Affiliated Institutions Communities of Practice. Clanton possesses a bachelor’s degree in Justice and Public Policy, a master’s in Education Administration, and is pursuing his doctorate in Pastoral Theology. Clanton is a licensed and ordained minister of the gospel. He serves as Associate Pastor of Sardis Missionary Baptist Church in Kennesaw, GA.
