UNC Charlotte Student Affairs Research and Assessment (SARA) is offering a virtual webinar that will introduce participants to what it means to be equity-minded with a focus on equity-minded assessment. After this webinar, participants will be able to:
1. Differentiate between equity and inequity in higher education
2. Describe equity-minded assessment
3. Describe best practices in equity-minded assessment
4. Explain how assessment can contribute to equitable policies and practices

The information gained from this webinar will be valuable to all participants regardless of whether assignments and responsibilities directly involve assessment related activities.

1st Presenter:
Erin Bentrim, Ph.D.
Divisional Director of Student Affairs Research & Assessment
UNC Charlotte

Erin Bentrim, Ph.D. is the divisional director of Student Affairs Research & Assessment at the University of North Carolina Charlotte. In this capacity, she provides the leadership and management of the assessment, research, and program evaluation agenda for over 22 functional units in the Division of Student Affairs. She has over 16 years of assessment, evaluation, and research experience with a combined total of 24 years in higher education. Her portfolio includes management level positions in Institutional Research & Effectiveness, Academic Assessment, Student Affairs Assessment, and Strategic Planning. In addition, to her administrative leadership roles, Dr. Bentrim has taught at the graduate and undergraduate level in diverse subject matters including psychology, higher education administration, and educational statistics. Dr. Bentrim currently serves on the board of the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators (NASPA) Assessment, Evaluation, and Research Knowledge Community and is a past national co-chair of the knowledge community. She presents regionally and nationally and is a regular consultant for college and university assessment offices. Dr. Bentrim is a founding member of the Student Affairs Assessment Leaders (SAAL) organization which serves individuals responsible for implementing assessment on their respective campuses. 

Dr. Bentrim holds a Ph.D. in Educational Psychology & Research, an M.Ed. in Student Personnel Services, both from the University of South Carolina, and is a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Wofford College where she earned a Bachelor’s in English.

Ellissa Brooks Nelson, Ph.D.
Senior Research Associate for Student Affairs Research & Assessment
UNC Charlotte

Ellissa Brooks Nelson, Ph.D., is a Senior Research Associate in Student Affairs Research & Assessment at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte.  She has expertise in assessment, evaluation, strategic planning and educational research. Dr. Brooks Nelson has worked in local government, higher and secondary education, and non-profit sectors. In her current role, she is supporting the division in moving toward a Culture of Evidence and provides consultation and support to departments in program evaluation and assessment efforts. Dr. Brooks Nelson has led organizations through program reviews, accreditation, and strategic planning development and implementation. Dr. Brooks Nelson holds a Ph.D. in Health Services Research and MA in Counseling, both from UNC Charlotte, and a BS in Sociology from Appalachian State University.
