Dean of Students
Dean of Students (S200A-20-139) 
Bloomsburg University of Pennsylvania is seeking a Dean of Students. This is a highly visible position that is responsible for the comprehensive leadership and administration of the Dean of Students Office which includes supervision of staff involved with judicial processes, Title IX related to student behavior, outreach and advocacy, student assistance, the Student Behavioral Intervention CARE Team, and Fraternity and Sorority Life.  This position reports to the Associate Vice President for Student Development and Campus Life. 
Much of the work of the Dean of Students involves making decisions and using judgment regarding the safety and well-being of individual students, student organizations, and the student community as a whole.  The Dean must discern if a particular situation is criminal, a violation of the Student Code of Conduct, mental health related, or a combination of these factors.  The Dean is the primary contact on campus regarding students of concern and leads the University’s Student Behavioral Intervention CARE Team, an interdisciplinary group that discusses and provides recommendations regarding the disposition of serious cases of students of concern.  The Dean is responsible for the Student Code of Conduct, and as such is the chief proponent for it and the vanguard of individual student and student organization rights and responsibilities related to the campus conduct system, as well as the senior conduct officer for the campus. The Dean trains and supervises staff related to policy and implementation of the Code.  The Dean leads goal development, communications, and reporting; and, plans and directs departmental assessments and program reviews for areas of responsibility. 
Overall, the role of the Dean of Students is to enhance the student experience and serve as an advocate for students and their needs.  Relationships with key partners is essential, particularly with law enforcement on and off campus, other Student Development & Campus Life Student Success/Enrollment Services professionals, faculty and staff, University legal counsel, off campus property owners and code enforcement officers.  The Dean works collaboratively with Student Success/Enrollment Services, Diversity and Inclusion, Academic Affairs, and other key areas on campus to enhance student success and retention. The Dean works with student success coaches/specialists as appropriate. The Dean provides/promotes communication to/with internal and external stakeholders related to student needs, programming, and social status.  The position is responsible for compliance with regulatory and reporting requirements for federal, state, system, and University, working with other campus areas as appropriate.
 
Requirements Include:
  • Master’s degree in higher education or related program required; doctorate preferred.
  • Seven or more years of experience in Student Affairs in higher education required; three years of experience in judicial affairs, counseling, or related area preferred; management experience preferred.
  • Supervision experience.
  • Demonstrated ability advocating for student needs with an understanding of and sensitivity to multiculturalism, diversity, and inclusion.
  • Demonstrated understanding of and experience with reporting requirements, best practices and trends in student affairs, judicial affairs, outreach and crisis response including behavioral intervention teams,
  • Demonstrated understanding of and experience with issues related to fraternity and sorority life, health and wellness, and counseling.
  • Must be able to effectively communicate with and relate to students.
Preferred Experience:
  • Doctoral degree in higher education or related program
  • High level of confidentiality and sensitivity toward the needs and interests of students.
  • Ability to develop and maintain professional working relationships, work independently, one to one and in group situations.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple tasks and projects efficiently
  • Demonstrated ability to assess student needs and make appropriate referrals
  • Experience with conflict resolution and mediation
  • Understanding fairness and consistency when dealing with students and in the delivery of programs and services
  • Possess finely tuned organizational skills, high attention to detail, and the ability to relate to students in a college environment.
  • Computer skills needed, specifically, as it pertains to knowledge and use of databases and the ability to communicate effectively online.
Term of Appointment: Permanent/Full Time (12-month position)
 
Salary:  This position is part of the management leadership team.  Salary is dependent on qualifications.  An excellent benefits package is included.
