Director of Student Conduct & Community Standards (Office of the Dean of Students)
Job Summary:
Southern Methodist University (SMU) is seeking a Director of Student Conduct and Community Standards.   This individual facilitates the student conduct process for SMU, including oversight for the hearing, adjudicating, and determination of responsibility for alleged violations of the Student Code of Conduct.  The Director educates the University community about the Code of Conduct and responsible behavior and oversees the training and advising of the University hearing boards, hearing officers, and Honor Council.  The Director also supervises two staff members within the Office of Student Conduct and Community Standards.
 
Essential Functions:
Oversees and facilitates the hearing, adjudication, and determinations of responsibility for alleged violations of the Student Code of Conduct for individuals and student organizations.
 
Advises faculty and staff members regarding the student conduct process as well as third parties, including parents, related to conduct questions.
 
Coordinates assessment initiatives and regular reporting regarding student conduct, including Clery reporting, SACS reporting, and database management.
 
Supervises two staff members within the Office of Student Conduct and Community Standards.
 
Oversees the development and implementation of an outreach plan designed to build relationships that help to educate the SMU student community about the Code of Conduct and responsible behavior.
 
Oversees the training and advising of the University hearing boards, hearing officers, and Honor Council.
 
Serves on University and Division committees as requested, including the Dean of Students Leadership Team, the Caring Community Connections Team, and the Bias Education Response Team.

Requirements Education and Experience:
Master’s degree in Higher Education or related field is required.  Doctoral degree or J.D. is preferred.
 
Five years of work experience working with University conduct systems and understanding/knowledge of pertinent federal and state legislation regarding conduct in higher education is required. Experience working student organization conduct is preferred.
 
Three years of supervisory/management experience is required.
 
Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint) is required.  Experience with an electronic record keeping system is also required.  Familiarity with Maxient is preferred.
 
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Must possess strong critical thinking and analytical skills, including the ability to investigate, observe, and resolve multiple complex issues and situations in a timely manner.  
 
Must have high-level interpersonal skills, with the ability to maintain effective working relationships with other departments. 
 
Must possess the ability to handle crises and potentially volatile situations and maintain objectivity. 
 
Candidate must be able to handle sensitive information with complete confidentiality and professionalism.
 
Must have outstanding verbal and written communication skills.
 
Must have well developed organizational skills that include effective planning, time management, and the ability to handle multiple tasks/projects.
 
Must be accurate and detail oriented, including financial responsibility, recommended use of budgetary funds and monitoring of expenditures against budget.
 
This position will require some evening and weekend work, including after-hours crisis management.
