James Madison University invites applicants for an Assistant Dean of Students. The successful candidate will have responsibility for program development and case management for the university’s care team called Madison Cares; including the recruitment and training of all members of the Madison Cares Network and maintaining positive working relationships with key constituents across the campus; managing a caseload of students and families going through the withdrawal and re-entry processes by working closely with the Office of the Registrar, Financial Aid & Scholarship, University Business Office, Counseling Center, Faculty and Academic Student Services; supervising the Coordinator in the Dean of Students; serving as a key staff member to address general concerns in the Dean of Students directing individuals to the appropriate resources, promoting student advocacy and providing guidance to students, families, faculty and staff.

Responsible for the program development and case management for the university’s care team called Madison Cares. Reviews all care referrals submitted to Madison Cares, assesses the level of risk, and determines/assigns the appropriate intervention. Provides direct support to students at minor or moderate risk through initial contact, one-on-one meetings, on-going outreach, resource referral, and advocacy.
Manages the recruitment and training of all members of the Madison Cares Network. Assigns student cases for outreach, monitors progress of students and network members, and supports network members as needed. Conducts assessment of Madison Cares, and collects data for case-referral numbers weekly, monthly, semesterly, and annually. Manages and updates student records, online submission form, website content, and database. Establishes and maintains positive working relationships with key constituents including but not limited to Office of Residence Life, Campus Safety, Counseling Center, Title IX Office, Student Affairs Technology Services, Student Accountability and Restorative Practices, and Academic Affairs.
University Withdrawal Advising:
Manages a caseload of students and families going through the withdrawal and re-entry processes. Supports students taking a leave of absence, maintains records of students, consults with physicians and mental health professionals or expert referrals as needed, and works closely with campus partners including but not limited to the Office of the Registrar, Financial Aid & Scholarship, University Business Office, Counseling Center, Faculty, and Academic Students Services.
Dean of Students Functions:
Serves as a key staff member to address general concerns, directs individuals to the appropriate resources, promotes student advocacy, and provides guidance to students, families, faculty, and staff. Serves as a representative on various divisional, departmental, or university-wide committees and staff training opportunities as applicable to the position. Stays abreast with the knowledge of university departments, campus resources, and community resources. Provides general administrative support, and assists the office’s administrative assistant with professor notification, extended absences, and general questions as needed. Provides educational initiatives and consultation to colleagues in both academic affairs and student affairs regarding Dean of Students’ functions including managing student concerns, ensuring early intervention, and identifying indicators and factors of risk.
Other duties as assigned:
Contributes to the overall success of the Dean of Students office by performing all other duties assigned by the Dean of Students, Associate Dean of Students, and/or Vice President for Student Affairs.
- A bachelor’s degree in Psychology, Social Work, Education, Higher Education, or related discipline with related work experience in social work/crisis response work
- Strong communication skills, both written and oral
- Experience working with young adults/college students
- Strong administrative, time management and organizational skills.
- A master’s degree in Student Affairs, Counseling, Social Work, or similar field
- Experience working in Student Affairs and/or Higher Education
- Strong collaboration skills in a professional setting
- Strong supervision skills and detail oriented
