Assistant Director of Residential Student Conduct

Position Summary

Residence Education and Housing Services is a department of the Division of Residential and Hospitality Services and Michigan State University. REHS focuses on a variety of areas impacting students’ overall on-campus living experiences at MSU including residence education, housing assignments, housing operations, facilities and maintenance. REHS manages 27 residence halls and two apartment communities, housing nearly 15,000 annually.

As Assistant Director of Residential Student Conduct, position will oversee and coordinate all aspects of the University’s conduct system. The Assistant Director will supervise the Student Behavior and Conflict Resolution Administrator. This position is responsible for the oversight and coordination of all aspects of the University’s residence hall conduct system, including implementing effective training programs for Residence Education team and serves as an active member of the Behavioral Intervention Team, providing case management support to the Behavior Threat Assessment Team and assistance to students in crisis, stress, and distress. It is also responsible for educational programming and participating on committees addressing policy issues, risk management, and long-term planning around these issues, serves as the department’s lead person on the writing of such reports as Clery, Campus Drugs and Alcohol, etc. The Assistant Director of Residential Student Conduct also works collaboratively with campus departments and programs including Office of Institutional Equity, Michigan State University Police Department, Athletics, academic colleges, and others as necessary to oversee the development, implementation, and coordination of strategic efforts aimed at creating an inclusive residential environment and assure compliance with all statutory and regulatory requirements.

The Assistant Director will regularly review conduct data to ensure compliance with Clery and other Federal statutes as well as for implicit and/or explicit bias.  The Assistant Director should have experience working directly with people from diverse racial, ethnic, socioeconomic, LGBTQIA+, and gender backgrounds.

Requirements

Unit Specific Education/Experience/Skills

Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing one to two years of post-bachelor degree work such as a Master's in Higher Education Administration, Counseling or related field; three to five years of related and progressively more responsible and expansive work experience in residence hall administration, counseling, human relations, and program development; knowledge of legal, ethical, and affirmative action practices for staff recruitment, selection, and appraisal; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

  2. Ability to flex communication style to multiple cultural environments and multiple social identities.
  3. Experience incorporating the perspectives of multiple communities, including [communities of color], in the consideration of impacts and outcomes of a decision-making process.
  4. An understanding of the concepts of institutional and structural racism and bias and their impact on underserved and underrepresented communities.
