Job Summary:
The Assistant Dean of Student Conduct reports to the Associate Vice President for Student Life/Dean of Students in the Division of Student Life. The Assistant Dean is responsible for the planning, implementation, evaluation/assessment and oversight of the University's student conduct system and related processes, policies and trainings. The Assistant Dean receives all reports regarding possible infractions of conduct regulations; schedules and facilitates all mediations and hearings; coordinates and monitors all appeals; maintains student disciplinary records; and recruits, trains, and advises the Accountability Hearing Board. The Assistant Dean stays current in relevant state and federal regulations and ensures compliance in all processes and required reporting. The Assistant Dean works to consistently update and enhance the educational, restorative and consequential balance of student conduct and student organizational conduct processes, procedures, and action items.
 
Job Description:
 
Job Responsibilities:
 
Coordinates and administers the student conduct system, which includes:
 
Recruiting, training and supervising hearing board members (students, faculty and staff). Maintaining the Student Conduct Code, ensuring consistency with local, state and federal expectations. Coordinating the annual review of the Student Handbook. Overseeing the process for student conduct meetings, hearings, appeals, and remediation efforts. Overseeing the maintenance of conduct records in the Maxient database. Providing leadership and training to residence life and housing student staff, hearing board members, and others on the resolution of conduct matters. Serving as the main point of contact with parents, students and other community members on issues related to student conduct. Designing, implementing and monitoring educational and orientation programs intended to educate the campus community related to student conduct and the student conduct processes.
 
Coordinates and administers the conduct process for student organizations, to include investigations.
 
Serves as a Title IX Deputy and investigator and/or member of the Sexual Misconduct Hearing Board.
 
Serves on the Bias Incidents Response Team.
 
Assists with case management and student intervention.
 
Assists with the development and facilitation of risk management workshops on alcohol and drugs, sexual misconduct, hazing, and other topics.
 
Monitors and produces data and/or reports required for compliance with federal and state laws (e.g., Clery Act, Title IX, Drug Free Schools, etc.) and university assessment
 
Assesses the student learning outcomes as related to the student conduct process.
 
Collaborates and partners with departments across campus, including Housing and Residence Life, General Counsel, Athletics, Fraternity and Sorority Life, Furman Police, and Alumni and Parent Engagement.
 
Researches and investigates ways to enhance the overall conduct system to align with Furman's priorities, mission, vision, values and The Furman Advantage educational model.
 
Serves in the professional on-call rotation.
 
Attends professional meetings, conferences and trainings, as necessary.
 
Serves on other campus committees as assigned.
 
Completes performance review process with supervisor to understand job performance expectations and how they fit into the department and University goals.
 
Performs other duties as assigned by the Associate Vice President for Student Life and Dean of Students in support of the goals and objectives of the Division of Student Life. Relationships:
 
Daily contact with members of own work unit, immediate supervisors, students, faculty and families to plan, coordinate, problem solve, present information related to mutual goals.
 
Frequent contact with campus departments to plan, coordinate, problem solve, present information related to mutual goals.
 
Frequent contact with parents to exchange factual information explanation of rules, regulations, practices or functions.
 
Responsibility for Final Decisions:
 
Reviews work to ensure compliance with procedures and deadlines.
 
Tasks involve interpretation of data and/or procedures to address problems or situations that are not clearly defined. Work involves non-routine/diverse work not defined by procedures.
 
Tasks involve multiple procedures with interrelated processes or steps. Work involves choosing the appropriate option or procedure to follow and applying established rules and procedures.
 
Errors may be detected within the department or section in which they occur, but may affect the work of others within the unit to trace errors and make corrections.
 
Reports To: Associate Vice President for Student Life and Dean of Students
 
Work is performed independently on routine work, non-routine issues or questions are referred to the supervisor.
 
Education/Skill Requirements:
 
A master's degree in Higher Education Administration, Student Affairs, Counseling or related field is required.
 
Minimum of 5+ years of relevant student conduct experience.
 
Expertise in Title IX, social justice, restorative mediation, and bias incident intervention preferred.
 
Strong oral and written communication skills.
 
Effective presentation skills.
 
Must have excellent organizational and leadership skills and the ability to work without close supervision.
 
Must have problem-solving and multi-tasking skills.
 
Must be able to work with diverse, interdisciplinary colleagues and community stakeholders at all levels.
 
Work Conditions:
