Position Description


The Associate Dean of Academic Integrity and Student Conduct reports to the Dean of Harvard College and directs the Harvard College Office of Academic Integrity and Student Conduct. The Associate Dean plays the leading role in promoting academic integrity and community standards across Harvard College. The successful candidate will be a primary resource for students, faculty, and staff seeking guidance on academic integrity and disciplinary issues and will demonstrate familiarity with research on academic integrity and student development, and an ability to develop and manage a system for adjudicating complex and sensitive community standard cases. The successful candidate will work with administrators and faculty to shape College policy on academic integrity and student discipline and maintain a community committed to academic integrity and honor.

The Associate Dean will be a visible ambassador for the College and will regularly engage with students in different venues such as Houses, First-Year Dorms, Undergraduate Council meetings, to educate the community on the Office and its work.

The Associate Dean will serve as the head of the Office of Academic Integrity and Student Conduct (OAISC). Day-to-day duties include budget development, oversight of staff, including two Assistant Deans, a department administrator, case managers, and several other positions. The Harvard College Administrative Board (a faculty committee charged with reviewing student records, providing exceptions to academic rules and policies, and adjudication of cases of social misconduct) is located in the Office of Academic Integrity and Student Conduct. The Associate Dean is responsible for oversight of the Assistant Dean who serves as Secretary of the Administrative Board. As a supervisor, the Associate Dean provides guidance and support to the Assistant Dean as needed. The Administrative Board provides interim measures as required under Title IX and implements the disciplinary response to violations of the University's Sexual and Gender-Based Harassment Policy. The Associate Dean will work with the Assistant Dean to lead the Administrative Board's work in providing interim measures and applying disciplinary action for violations of the University's Sexual and Gender-Based Harassment Policy. The Associate and Assistant Dean will serve as the primary liaisons to Harvard University's Office of Sexual and Gender-Based Dispute Resolution.

The Associate Dean also supervises the Assistant Dean who serves as Secretary of the Honor Council, which is responsible for addressing concerns of academic dishonesty, working with faculty to promote positive measures for academic integrity.

The Associate Dean will be responsible for leading the office's outreach to the Harvard College community. The successful candidate will also be responsible, with the assistant deans and case managers, for training resident deans, tutors, proctors and other members of the Harvard College and FAS communities in the rules, procedures, and practices of Harvard College and the Faculty of Arts and Sciences. Working in partnership with other offices, the Office of Academic Integrity and Student Conduct maintains FAS and Harvard College publications including the Handbook for Students, and the successful candidate will need careful attention to detail, a detailed understanding of Harvard College and FAS rules, and procedures. The Associate Dean also plays a leading role in maintaining records and case management software and is responsible for managing relationships with external vendors and other offices across Harvard University, including the Office of Undergraduate Education, the Office of the Registrar, the Secretary of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences, and others.


Basic Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent work experience required
  • Minimum of 10 years' relevant work experience
  • Supervisory experience


Additional Qualifications and Skills


Master's degree required; Ph.D. in a field taught in the Faculty of Arts and Sciences strongly preferred; five years. experience in higher education in a selective, residential liberal arts college preferred; demonstrated evidence of strong written and oral communication skills; understanding of research on academic integrity and an ability to synthesize and communicate that research; background in teaching or training, preferred; experience with leadership across all aspects of the academic community, including students, faculty, administrators, parents, and professionals, required. Experience in supervision and staff management required. Experience with residential system desirable; Demonstrated attention to detail, good judgment, discretion, and ability to handle sensitive information required.
