Assistant Director, Community Standards & Civility

The Assistant Director of Community Standards and Civility will assist with all matters relating to the Student Conduct System. Serve as a member of the student conduct case management team; participating as a hearing officer for high level cases and as a hearing board chair within the larger student conduct system. Assist with the management of over 2,000 Student Conduct cases that range in severity from physical abuse to noise. Assist in all aspects of case management, critical decision making, preparing and making judgment calls regarding case materials. Assist in the management of restorative practices and diversion programs within the student conduct system. This includes but is not limited to the creation of new restorative initiatives, management of the Flyer Legacy program, coordination with faculty participants for student circles and general outreach to the student body concerning policy and process awareness and prevention. Research, create and implement resolution methods that reflect the Catholic and Marianist charisms found within current restorative justice practice. Coordinate training programs offered to various constituent groups at the University, create and implement passive and active code education/prevention, manage and coordinate parent outreach and response. Responsible for the recruitment and training of University Hearing Board members. Oversee the training for Conduct Advisors and Perspective Meeting Facilitators. Serve as an investigator for accusations of hazing and misconduct within student organizations, recreational groups and NCAA affiliated collegiate sports teams. Serve on the Dean of Students on-call advocate rotation. Report to the Associate Director of Community Standards and Civility and assist in the management of student records, and the Student Conduct system in general. Assist in the management of student conduct issues as they arise in the office. Serve as a super user for the office’s student conduct software and maintenance of it to ensure ease of use and efficiency for staff members utilizing it for student conduct purposes. This is a full time benefit eligible position that offers health, dental and vision insurance, retirement, disability, tuition assistance, vacation/sick accrual and holiday pay.

Requirements Minimum Qualifications:
  • Master’s degree in higher education, communications, sociology or related fields.
  • At least 2 years professional experience working in college/University student conduct systems.
  • Knowledge of Restorative Justice Practices in higher education.
  • Strong communication skills with regards to managing conversations with aggravated/displeased constituents.
  • Understanding of how the Catholic and Marianist foundation of the University connect with restorative justice, student conduct, intercultural competencies and character development.

Preferred Qualifications:

While not everyone may possess all of the preferred qualifications, the ideal candidate will bring many of the following:

  • Completion of Restorative Justice Training facilitated by USD Center for Restorative Justice and partners or in partnership with RJNCC.
  • Experience or training in facilitating circles, conferences, mediations, and/or dialogues.
  • Effective interpersonal communication skills.
