Conduct Officer

Summary

The Conduct Officer, a key member of the Student Rights and Responsibilities team at the University of New Mexico, has a multi-faceted role. The incumbent is responsible for administering the Student Code of Conduct with a focus on comprehensive, educational, and fair practices that balance with well-being and safety of all university community members.  The incumbent fosters a positive environment of responsibility, accountability, and personal growth while educating students about their rights and responsibilities. The role adapts to the needs of a diverse and ever-changing student population. Reporting to the Associate Dean and Director of Student Rights and Responsibilities, the Conduct Officer manages a caseload of conduct cases, including reviewing reports, conducting investigations, adjudication. The incumbent plays a vital role in developing and leading educational programs and interventions for students, including outreach and training efforts for faculty, students, staff, and other relevant parties.

Requirements

 

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Contribute to a comprehensive learning-centered student conduct system through development and implementation of a system that focuses on the educational aspect of student conduct, including investigations, application of standards, outcome development, and training.
  2. Conduct impartial investigations for incidents involving students, student organizations, and visitors, including coordinating meetings, conducting interviews, case management, adjudication, and documentation and records management.
  3. Contribute to the development, implementation, and evaluation of ADR processes such as conflict coaching, facilitated conversations, and restorative justice-based approaches.
  4. Contribute to the creation and review of the Student Rights and Responsibilities (SRR) strategic plan, as well as research contemporary practices regarding procedures and persistent issues of concern.
  5. Maintain confidentiality and ensure information is compliant with relevant laws and regulations while providing necessary updates to relevant stakeholders.
  6. Develop and implement educational conduct outcomes grounded in foundational learning objectives.
  7. Provide data for assessment and compliance projects including quantitative and qualitative information and assisting in the development of statistical and informational reports.
  8. Act as a resource for the campus community on matters related to student conduct, conflict resolution and the interpretation of student conduct regulations.
  9. Aid in management of student conduct software including assessing system health, configuring settings, conducting audits, and managing records retention projects.  
  10. Create content for SRR publications, resources, programs, and websites. Plan and lead events and programs to education students, staff, and faculty. content for SRR publications, resources, programs and website.
  11. Keep current with developments in student conduct, alternative dispute resolution restorative justice, and Title IX and implement change based on contemporary standards.
  12. Supervise student employees as needed.
  13. Perform duties as a Campus Security Authority (CSA).
  14. Participate in university, division, and department committees and projects as appropriated or requested.
  15. Undertake additional job-related tasks as assigned.

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required

  • Extensive knowledge of University policies and procedures related to student conduct administration.
  • Ability to conduct interviews and investigations using trauma-informed techniques when appropriate
  • Analytical, investigative, and problem-solving skills.
  • Conflict resolution and /or mediation skills.
  • Knowledge of crisis intervention and advocacy principles and practices.
  • Ability to foster a cooperative work environment.
  • Process improvement and policy development skills.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively across a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community.
  • Strong analytical and organization skills.
  • Ability to develop and present educational programs and/or workshops.

Bachelor's degree; at least 3 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.

Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in student conduct administration, residence life and housing or other Student Affairs departments
  • Experience working with student conduct software systems
